Recognising, expressing and relating

Understanding how we feel, recognising emotions in others and finding ways to express what is happening to us are abilities that contribute to emotional awareness, communication and relationships with others.

Social skills develop through interaction: sharing attention, waiting, taking turns, cooperating, interpreting situations, recognising different points of view or finding ways to respond to what happens around us. These abilities can be explored at very different levels and adapted to each person's needs.

What you will find here

This category brings together resources and activities for exploring emotions, personal expression, interaction and social relationships.

You will find:

  • Resources for recognising and identifying emotions.
  • Activities for expressing feelings, preferences and personal experiences.
  • Materials for interpreting facial expressions, gestures and social situations.
  • Games and activities involving turns, cooperation and shared participation.
  • Resources for exploring relationships, behaviour and different points of view.
  • Materials that encourage conversation and reflection about everyday situations.

An activity can begin simply by distinguishing between two facial expressions or indicating how we feel. At other levels, it can involve interpreting a situation, talking about what another person might be feeling, considering different responses or participating in a cooperative activity.

The aim is to offer opportunities to understand ourselves and others better, express what we feel and participate in social relationships according to each person's abilities.
